Upper Moreland Police Collaborate with District Attorney to Apprehend Retail Theft Ring

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Upper Moreland Township Police Chief Andrew Block have jointly announced the apprehension of Cuong Nam Ly, aged 33, and Chung Nam Ly, aged 31, both hailing from Philadelphia. These arrests are in connection with felony charges linked to an organized retail theft ring that operated across Montgomery, Bucks, Philadelphia, Delaware, Luzerne, and Berks counties.

The investigation, initiated by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau’s Major Crimes Unit and the Upper Moreland Police Department, commenced in November 2022. During this period, a review of loss prevention records from major retailers, Home Depot and Lowes, revealed that the Ly brothers were orchestrating an Organized Retail Theft Ring, specifically targeting these two establishments.

The retail theft scheme involved the purchase of products, predominantly online, followed by the replacement of the original UPC code on the packaging with a higher-priced one. The stolen goods, including pricey batteries and chargers, were then sold by the Lys and their co-conspirators through Facebook Marketplace, converting the stolen items into cash. The collective loss incurred by retail stores across six counties exceeded $200,000.

Both Cuong Nam Ly and Chung Nam Ly have been arrested and charged with over 200 felony counts.

Missouri Prison Escapee, Mario Che-Tiul, Apprehended in Chester County, Pennsylvania

Authorities have confirmed that Mario Che-Tiul, a suspect in a child sexual assault case who escaped from a Missouri prison in June, has been captured in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The apprehension took place on Gap Newport Pike in Avondale around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, in collaboration with the Chester County Criminal Investigation Division, successfully carried out the capture.

Mario Che-Tiul was originally incarcerated in Barry County, Missouri, facing child sexual assault charges. He was one of seven inmates who managed to escape custody on June 1, with six of them being recaptured promptly. Che-Tiul remained a fugitive for over three months before his recent apprehension.

Following his capture, U.S. Marshals transported Che-Tiul to the Chester County Prison for processing, and he will ultimately be returned to Missouri. It's worth noting that this is the same facility from which convicted murderer Danilo Cavalcante escaped, leading to a two-week manhunt before his recapture.

Celebrating His 100th Birthday: Abington Graduate, Willow Grove Native, and WWII Veteran

Benjamin Berry, a native of Willow Grove, a graduate of Abington High School, and a World War II veteran, marks his remarkable 100th birthday today!

Berry answered the call to serve his country, being drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 19, shortly after his graduation from Abington.

His senior living apartment in Germantown proudly showcases a photograph of his World War II comrades and a map depicting the Battle of the Bulge.

Reflecting on his wartime experiences, Berry shared, “When I joined the veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, there were 33 members. Today, there are only two of us—myself and another fellow, Jake Rizzo, who is 98 years old.”

Benjamin Berry and his late wife, Lois, celebrated over 50 years of marriage and raised four children. In 2021, The Chestnut Hill Local conducted an interview with Berry, and last year, 6ABC featured this esteemed veteran in a piece highlighting the Aces Museum in Philadelphia.

The Phils are exactly where they want to be, despite a rather odd season.

The 2023 Phillies season has been peculiar, reminiscent of Jalen Hurts' status as a good quarterback—an undeniable fact.

Despite their status as defending National League Champions, the team faced numerous uncertainties, including leadoff hitter choices, pitching rotations, bullpen performance, Bryce Harper's recovery, and future plans for players like Rhys Hoskins and Aaron Nola.

Starting poorly at 6-10, the Phillies rebounded and have been among baseball's top five teams since May 31st, holding a 58-40 record. Despite lingering questions, they lead the NL Wild Card race, aiming for a home playoff series.

Their potent offense and the formidable atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park are assets. The Phillies are primed for a postseason push, with Philadelphia fans eagerly awaiting the journey ahead.

The NFC East: One of Football's Most Competitive Divisions

In the NFC East, three teams remain undefeated, and no team has suffered more than a single loss.

Despite Philadelphia's offense not yet delivering a complete performance, they stand out as one of the NFL's highest-scoring teams. Concurrently, defensive coordinator Sean Desai aims to boost edge production as the Eagles currently rank in the lower half for sacks after two games.

As all four teams gear up for Week 3, let's assess the NFC East's status ahead of Thursday Night Football and the weekend matchups.

Philadelphia Eagles: Division Record: 0-0, Conference Record: 1-0

Week 2 Outcome: Victory (34-28 against the Vikings)

Week 2 Summary: The Eagles have shown some inconsistency in their performance over the first two weeks of the season. Nonetheless, they remain undefeated with a 2-0 record following a 34-28 triumph over the Vikings during Amazon Prime's Thursday Night Football.

Jalen Hurts, the All-Pro quarterback, contributed significantly with two rushing touchdowns and an additional passing touchdown, helping Philadelphia fend off a late comeback attempt by Minnesota.

Week 3 Matchup: Facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0)
