Tropical Storm Ophelia Forms - Impact For PA

Southeast Pennsylvania is bracing for potential widespread flooding, heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, and the possibility of an isolated tornado this weekend as Tropical Storm Ophelia has developed in the Atlantic.

Coastal residents face the greatest risk of storm impacts, but the heavy rainfall is expected to extend well inland, and the region should prepare for gusty winds, according to meteorologists.

The Philadelphia area is forecasted to receive between two and three inches of rainfall. Swimmers and boaters along the Atlantic coast, from North Carolina to New England, should be aware of the risk of dangerous rip currents and high seas.

The Philly Jewish Exponent provides commentary on the contentious Nazi monument in Elkins Park.

The Philadelphia Jewish Exponent has offered commentary on the controversial monument to a Nazi military division, located at Saint Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery (also known as Fox Chase Cemetery) at Cedar and Glenmore avenues in an Elkins Park section of Abington Township.

The article addresses an alleged rise in antisemitism and refers to a number of recent incidents, including the cemetery’s monument. From the article: A few examples of redlines we are facing: St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Elkins Park has a monument dedicated to a unit of Ukrainian soldiers who fought for Nazi Germany during World War II.

The large stone cross honors the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Schutzstaffel — the Nazi military branch often referred to simply as “the SS.” Some historians, including historians from the Ukrainian Jewish community, have argued that painting the monument as a tribute to the SS doesn’t capture the full historical picture.

For some, the monument represents Ukrainians who fought for Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. The monument was reportedly covered up by the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia earlier this month.

Shocked animal control officer rescues Bald eagle in Bucks County

A wounded bald eagle is now in good health, ready to support its avian companions just in time for Monday night football!

When reports of an injured bird surfaced near an apartment complex in Bensalem, the animal control officer sprang into action this week.

To everyone's amazement, the injured bird turned out to be a bald eagle!

The eagle was safely apprehended and subsequently transported to the Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Chalfont.

Authorities revealed that the majestic bird had sustained an unspecified injury but would receive treatment at the rehabilitation center.

Upcoming Nighttime Lane Closures on I-95 in Philadelphia: Prepare for Travel Delays Next Week

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is scheduled to conduct core borings on Interstate 95 (I-95) in Philadelphia during nighttime hours. These activities will result in lane closures at two locations, leading to travel disruptions. Motorists should anticipate additional travel time from Monday, September 25, to Friday, September 29, between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

These borings are related to PennDOT's I-95/GR6 and I-95/BR3 projects. The GR6 project involves the reconstruction of southbound I-95 from Frankford Avenue to the I-676/Vine Street Expressway, while the BR3 project focuses on the reconstruction of the northbound lanes of I-95 from Wheatsheaf Lane to just north of Margaret Street.

Construction for these projects is expected to commence in late 2024 or early 2025. For additional information on these and other PennDOT I-95 projects, please visit www.95revive.com, where you can find detailed project descriptions and their impact on traffic.
