Two days later, on June 20, 2023, a female suspect, believed to be wearing a wig (a common tactic used by the Felony Lane Gang), was reported at the drive-thru lane of Truist Bank in Owings Mills, MD. She cashed a fraudulent check drawn from the victim's account, amounting to approximately $2,300. It was also reported that there were two more unsuccessful attempts to cash fraudulent checks at other Maryland branches.

Residents Beware: Pennsylvania Hit by Grant Scam Demanding Tax Payments

PA residents are being targeted by a new, sophisticated scam involving false promises of a state grant, according to warnings from the state treasurer's office. The scam operates through calls, emails, or letters falsely claiming to represent the Pennsylvania Treasury Department or the Federal Reserve Bank. Scammers deceive recipients into believing they will receive grant money but assert that taxes must be paid first, typically through gift cards or other unconventional payment methods.

Treasurer Stacy Garrity emphasized that this is a multifaceted scam, noting that the state does not announce grant awards in this manner nor does it collect taxes upfront for such purposes. Importantly, she highlighted that legitimate government agencies, including the Treasury, would never request payments via gift cards.
