Schools Announce Two-Hour Delay Amid Freezing Weather Conditions on Wed

School districts in Lower Moreland, Upper Moreland and Abinton have announced a two-hour delayed opening for Wednesday, January 17. This decision comes in response to the recent weather conditions and a warning from the National Weather Service about the potential for extremely cold temperatures and icy conditions.
for Lower Moreland, Kinderlinks (a.m. only) and transportation for our non-public schools will also operate on a two-hour delay schedule. Today, January 17, 2024 is letter day "F" on students' schedules.

Montgomery County to Hold Homelessness Count, Collecting Essential Items

As winter brings brutally cold temperatures, Montgomery County is set to conduct its annual homelessness point in time count on January 23. This count is crucial in understanding the scope of homelessness in the county, especially during harsh weather conditions that pose significant risks to those without shelter.

The county is actively collecting various items to distribute to those in need during this count. A comprehensive list of needed items, including waterproof backpacks, hand warmers, and wool socks, is available online. These items are particularly important as the county endures a cold and wet winter.

In 2023, the count identified a total of 357 homeless individuals, including those in emergency shelters, transitional housing, and sleeping outdoors. Notably, 110 individuals were found sleeping outside, a figure that raised concern among authorities. While the overall number showed a decrease from 2022, largely due to temporary shelters provided in the wake of Hurricane Ida, the number of people sleeping outdoors remains a significant issue.

According to the Montgomery County Planning Commission, there is a severe shortage of affordable rental units for lower-income households. Over 65 percent of renter households earning below $35,000 annually spend more than half of their income on rent and utilities, highlighting the affordability crisis in housing.

More Snow on Friday.

As of the latest meteorological updates, precise snowfall predictions for Huntingdon Valley on Friday remain uncertain due to the early stages of forecasting for the upcoming storm complex. However, meteorologists agree that while the upcoming storm is not expected to be exceptionally severe, it could bring an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow to the region. This new snowfall would layer over what is anticipated to be a solid mix of snow and ice following two of the coldest nights this winter.

The impending weather system is linked to another coastal storm forming in the Southeast, with its precipitation primarily associated with upper-air systems in the west.

The snowfall pattern observed on Monday night and Tuesday in the area was slow, accumulating at a rate of about an inch every five hours. The upcoming snowfall could accumulate even more slowly, potentially over a span of 36 hours. This extended duration of snowfall could lead to gradual accumulation, impacting travel and daily activities in the area. The forecast suggests an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow over a firm snow-and-ice cover.
