Winter Weather Advisory in Huntingdon Valley: Snowfall and Cold Snap Ahead

The weather forecast indicates a mostly cloudy but slightly warmer Thursday with temperatures in the 30s. An Alert has been issued for Friday due to accumulating snow expected throughout the day.

Huntingdon Valley is bracing for a winter spell as the National Weather Service issues a hazardous weather outlook, effective until Monday, January 23.

The forecast predicts a cold front moving in, with snowfall expected to start late Thursday night, leading to potentially slippery conditions. Residents should anticipate one to three inches of snow, particularly on Friday.

The week ahead will see varying conditions, including mostly cloudy skies on Thursday with temperatures hovering around 32°F and a slight chance of snow in the evening. Friday will bring the bulk of the snow, with a high near 31°F and northeast winds of 5 to 10 mph.

The weekend offers a slight respite, although temperatures will dip, with partly sunny skies on Saturday and lows around 15°F to 16°F during the nights. This wintry weather calls for caution, as roads and sidewalks are likely to become treacherous.

Jenkintown's 150 Year Journey: 1976 Student Essays to be Showcased

In a fascinating journey into the past, the Jenkintown School District and Jenkintown Library are preparing to unveil a unique historical treasure: a collection of personal essays penned by local high school students from 1976. These essays, which offer a glimpse into the life of Jenkintown teens during America's Bicentennial year, were part of an assignment from Jenkintown High School's Local History class. The discovery of this time capsule was made by Ben Bergman, who stumbled upon the envelope while searching for memorabilia in the library archives for the Jenkintown 150 website.

The envelope, sealed 48 years ago by then-teacher Dan Chittik, was handed over to the library for safekeeping. With the town's 150th anniversary celebrations underway, Chittik has given permission to open this envelope, adding to the festivities. Nina Meister, the director of Jenkintown Library, explained that their archive cabinet, a trove of historical items, held this envelope and other relics, including a 1920s map, old building plans, an audio recording from a Jenkintown-themed radio show, and minutes from the library’s first board meeting in 1803.

The much-anticipated unsealing of these essays will take place at the Jenkintown Library on Monday, January 22, at 11:30 am, coinciding with the anniversary of the assignment's due date. This event, promising to be a bridge to the past, will be live-streamed on the library’s Facebook page. Furthermore, excerpts from the essays will be shared on Jenkintown 150’s social media platforms, and the essays will be displayed in the library throughout the year, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the town's history.

Dave's Hot Chicken Spices Up Willow Grove Shopping Center This Fall

Willow Grove Shopping Center is set to welcome a new culinary delight as Dave's Hot Chicken, a popular fried chicken chain, prepares to open its doors this fall. Announced by Federal Realty Investment Trust, the 2,825-square-foot restaurant will be a part of the shopping center's multi-million-dollar renovation, which also includes a six-story, 260-unit apartment building. This new outlet, however, will not feature a drive-thru lane, as noted by the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Dave's Hot Chicken is celebrated for its jumbo chicken sliders and tenders, available in seven different spice levels, catering to a wide range of taste preferences. The chain's journey began in 2017 in a Hollywood parking lot, starting as a modest street food stand with just a portable fryer and a few picnic tables. Since then, the brand has seen remarkable growth, expanding to over 700 franchise locations across the U.S., Canada, and the Middle East. In addition to this new location, the chain is planning to launch over 90 more restaurants in 2024.
