SWAT Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting of Jenkintown Man

IIn a tragic incident early Wednesday morning near the Gary Barbera car dealership on East Roosevelt Boulevard, 73-year-old Lawrence Packard of Jenkintown was fatally shot by Philadelphia SWAT officers. The situation began when police responded to a report of a possible vehicle crash around 4:56 am, as reported by NBC10. Upon arrival, officers found Packard in a Dodge Ram pickup truck, continuously honking the horn.

After an initial interaction in which an officer determined Packard did not need assistance, the situation escalated when the officer heard gunshots from the truck's direction and saw Packard with a gun. Backup was called, leading to the arrival of SWAT officers who established a perimeter and barricade around the scene.

During the standoff, Packard reportedly fired at officers and threw objects from his vehicle. SWAT Lieutenant William Schmid and Officer Patrick Saba, who were part of the response team, engaged with Packard after he shot at them. Packard was fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Witnesses described the scene as intense, likening it to a "small warzone."

Fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident. Schmid, a 42-year-old, 21-year veteran, and Saba, a 38-year-old, 17-year veteran, both assigned to SWAT, have been placed on administrative duty as standard procedure following such incidents. The investigations into the shooting by internal affairs and the officer-involved shooting unit are ongoing. It's noted that the initial responding officer's body-worn camera was activated during the incident but did not capture the shooting.

Discussion for Rydal Road Life Care Facility in Abington Township

The Abington Township Board of Commissioners is set to convene a public hearing on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30 pm. The focus of the meeting is to deliberate on a Conditional Use application related to the development of a proposed life care facility and nursing home at 1209 Rydal Road. This upcoming meeting serves as a continuation of the discussion initiated in a previous Conditional Use Hearing held in November.

The venue for this important community discussion is the Sutherland Building Auditorium of Penn State Abington, located at 1600 Woodland Road. This location provides a suitable setting for the community members and stakeholders to gather and engage in the deliberations.

Chaverim Realty Partners, LLC, the applicant for this project, is seeking approval to establish a Life Care Facility, which encompasses Continuing Care, as well as a Nursing Home. The proposed development is planned within the R-1 Low-Density Residential Zoning District. This hearing represents a critical step in the approval process, giving an opportunity for public input and review by the township officials.
