Gov. Shapiro Calls for Recreational Marijuana Legalization in Pennsylvania

Governor Josh Shapiro is taking a strong stance on the legalization of recreational marijuana in Pennsylvania, urging state lawmakers to pass legislation that would regulate and tax the industry effectively. During his annual budget address in Harrisburg on February 6, Shapiro highlighted the financial and societal benefits of legalizing marijuana, noting that Pennsylvania is currently missing out on an estimated $250 million in annual revenue. The governor also pointed out the detrimental effects of not legalizing, such as bolstering the black market and unnecessarily straining law enforcement resources.

Shapiro's push for legalization aligns with a growing trend in the region, with neighboring states like Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland having already legalized recreational marijuana. He stressed the importance of Pennsylvania joining these states to avoid falling behind both economically and socially.

The governor's proposed timeline aims for the bill to be signed by July, with the sales of recreational marijuana beginning by January 2025. Furthermore, Shapiro emphasized the need for legislative action to expunge the records of individuals convicted for nonviolent possession of small amounts of marijuana, addressing past injustices and paving the way for a more equitable future in Pennsylvania's approach to marijuana.

Pre Valentines Day Storm to Bring Potential Snow and Rain to the Northeast

A significant weather shift is anticipated across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and northern Maryland early next week, with a mix of rain and snow forecasted for Monday, February 12, extending into Tuesday, February 13. This marks a departure from the relatively calm and mild conditions experienced since January. The upcoming storm, moving across the Midwest to the Northeast, is expected to disrupt this period of tranquility with potentially impactful weather.

The National Weather Service predicts that precipitation will commence on Monday, with snowfall probabilities intensifying by evening and continuing through Tuesday. However, precise snowfall predictions and impacted areas remain uncertain at this juncture.

In the lead-up to the storm, temperatures are set to rise, reaching near 60 degrees by Saturday, February 10. This warming trend will persist into Super Bowl Sunday, with a forecast high of 55 degrees and mostly sunny skies, providing a brief respite before the onset of the storm early in the following week.

⚾️ The Philadelphia Phillies are flying under the radar this offseason, overshadowed by the high-profile moves of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite this, baseball's unpredictable nature means upsets are always possible, as the Phillies themselves experienced last season with their NLCS loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

🏒 The Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks are reportedly interested in trading for Finnish defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, a move that could be challenging. The 29-year-old boasts impressive stats, including 1,159 career shot blocks, 44 this season, and a powerful top shot speed of 96.37 mph. His average shot speed, at 60.59 mph, surpasses nearly all NHL All-Star competitors, with only Cale Makar outperforming him.

🏈 Despite a challenging end to the season with six losses in their last seven games, including a wild-card round defeat to Tampa Bay, the Philadelphia Eagles are undergoing significant coaching staff changes, appointing Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. However, Eagles fans remain optimistic about the team's roster, where the majority of the starters received over 80% in stay votes, with only a few falling below 50%.
