Resident of Huntingdon Valley weighs in on the alleged 'surge pricing' strategy by Wendy's

Wendy's, recognized as the country's second-largest burger chain, recently came under scrutiny over reports of implementing "surge pricing" by 2025, a strategy where menu prices fluctuate based on the demand during different times of the day. This concept, commonly associated with ride-sharing services, sparked concern among consumers, including Steve McGarry from Huntingdon Valley, who expressed his disapproval to 6ABC, stating he would avoid establishments adopting such pricing tactics.

However, Wendy's has clarified these reports, emphasizing that the discussion on menu price changes was misinterpreted. In a blog post, the company stated its exploration of digital menu boards and dynamic pricing is aimed at enhancing customer value, particularly during slower periods, rather than increasing costs during peak times. Wendy's reassured customers and media outlets that it does not plan to implement surge pricing to capitalize on high demand periods.

The confusion stemmed from comments made by Wendy’s President and CEO Kirk Tanner during an earnings call on February 15, mentioning the test of dynamic pricing and day-part offerings starting in 2025. Following the backlash, Wendy's officials, including Vice President Heidi Schauer, reiterated that surge pricing was never part of their strategy, aiming to clarify the company's position and intentions regarding future pricing models.

This clarification from Wendy's seeks to alleviate concerns over potential price hikes during busy hours, instead highlighting a focus on offering discounts and value during less busy times to attract more customers.

Trial Set for Abington Officer on Charges of Institutional Sexual Assault

Jordan Jones, a 29-year-old former school resource officer at Abington High School, is set to stand trial on charges including institutional sexual assault, endangering the welfare of children, and corruption of minors. His formal arraignment is scheduled for April 10 in Montgomery County court, after which a trial date will be established.

Jones, who waived his preliminary hearing, is currently free on $50,000 unsecured bail, with strict conditions prohibiting contact with the alleged victim and her family, as well as unsupervised contact with any minors. The investigation into the allegations against Jones is being led by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, with cooperation from Abington police officials.

Court documents reveal that the relationship between Jones and the high school student began in November 2023 and involved sexual activity approximately 15 times during the school year, some of which occurred at Jones' residence. A recorded phone call on February 12 between Jones and the girl captured Jones making statements that implied acknowledgment of their illegal relationship and his emotional investment despite the legal risks.

Given Jones' position at the school, the charges against him constitute a felony of the third degree for institutional sexual assault under Pennsylvania law. A conviction for a third-degree felony could result in a sentence ranging from 3½ to 7 years in prison.
