Sophisticated Gift Card Scam Targeting Shoppers, Police Caution

The Abington Township Police Department is alerting residents to a sophisticated gift card scam that has been occurring in the area. This scam involves a deliberate and technologically advanced method to defraud unsuspecting gift card purchasers.

Scammers are targeting various stores, including grocery and drug stores, where they steal empty gift cards off the racks. They then proceed to carefully open these cards to record all the necessary information using a sophisticated computer program. After recording the details, the scammers reseal the gift cards meticulously and place them back on the store shelves.

Unknowingly, customers purchase these tampered gift cards and load them with money. As soon as the cards are activated and funds are added, the scammers receive a notification and quickly drain the funds from these cards. Consequently, the customers are left with gift cards that have no remaining value.
